Stretch Film Types Explained: Perforated, Vented, and Pre-Stretched Wrap

Not every pallet needs the same film. Solid stretch wrap is the default, but perforated, vented, and specialty films exist because some loads need airflow, less material, or visual identification more than they need a full moisture barrier - using solid film on all of them wastes money or causes problems the right film would have avoided.
Perforated (oscillated) film: airflow without giving up containment
Oscillated film has a consistent pattern of small perforations punched through it during manufacturing, which lets air pass through the wrap while still holding the load together. That makes it the right choice for loads that need ventilation - anything that could sweat, mold, or trap heat if fully sealed under solid film. It also uses less material than an equivalent solid wrap, which is part of why it's priced lower per roll for a comparable width and length.
Vented netting: more airflow than perforated film, less containment
Netting is a different product from perforated film - it's an open-weave elastic mesh rather than a solid film with holes in it. It allows significantly more airflow, which is why it's the standard choice for produce, agricultural loads, and other perishables where ventilation matters more than a tight moisture seal. The tradeoff is less protection from dust and UV than even perforated film provides, so it's a specialty choice for airflow-critical loads, not a general-purpose substitute for stretch wrap.
Pre-stretched film: less force to apply, same containment
Pre-stretched film is stretched by the manufacturer before it's wound onto the roll, so the operator is pulling film that's already partially stretched rather than generating all that tension by hand. That significantly reduces the physical effort of hand-wrapping a pallet - less wrist and shoulder strain over a shift - without giving up load containment. It's a different product from "down-gauge" film (a thinner film engineered to perform like a heavier gauge through better resin and stretch technology) - the two are often combined, but they're solving different problems: one reduces application effort, the other reduces material weight per roll.
Colored film: identification, not just aesthetics
Colored stretch film is used for visual coding in a warehouse - flagging load type, department, status, or ship date at a glance without reading a label. Some colored and black films also add UV resistance for loads stored outdoors or near windows for extended periods, where clear film would let UV degrade the contents faster.
Hand film vs. machine film
Hand film runs narrower (commonly 11"-18") and shorter (1,000-2,000 ft rolls) for manual wrapping. Machine film runs wider (20"-30"+) and much longer (5,000-9,000+ ft) for use on stretch wrap machines, which apply pre-stretch more consistently than most operators can by hand. If you're buying by roll dimensions rather than by name, check both width and length against your application - machine rolls won't fit a hand-wrap workflow and vice versa.
