Caulking guns: ATC economy and industrial steel guns in smooth rod and drip free, lightweight composite and aluminum drip-free guns, and Dripless ergonomic 12:1 guns for 10 oz cartridges. Thrust ratio is the spec that matters and it is the reason a cheap gun is tiring — a 12:1 or higher ratio moves stiff, cold or high-solids sealant with far less hand force than a basic 6:1. Drip free means the rod releases pressure when you let go of the trigger instead of continuing to ooze, which is the difference between a clean bead and a mess at the end of every run. Smooth rod guns are quieter and give finer control than a ratchet rod. Size the gun to the cartridge: a standard 10 oz gun will not take a quart tube or a sausage pack.
