Strapping seals and core sizes: how to match them to your strap
Share
Two questions come up with almost every strapping order: will these seals work with our strap, and what core is the coil on? Getting either one wrong means strap that won't seal or a coil that won't fit the dispenser. Here is how to match both.
Match the seal to the strap
- Same width. A 1/2 in strap takes a 1/2 in seal. The width is printed on the coil label and listed for every size on our strapping size chart.
- Same material. Plastic seals are for polypropylene and polyester strap. Steel seals are for steel strap. Don't mix them.
- Same tool. The seal style has to suit the tool you crimp with. If you aren't sure, tell us the tool make and model.
Plastic strapping seals
Plastic strapping seals come in 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 in widths, 1,000 to a case, in three styles:
- Open seal: the standard notch seal.
- Open seal, long: a longer body for extra hold.
- Combination seal: for combination tools that tension and seal in one tool.
Steel strapping seals
Steel strapping seals come in 3/8 in up to 1-1/4 in widths, in regular duty and heavy duty, in two types:
- Open seal: the standard notch seal.
- Full overlap push seal: a push-type sealed joint.
Regular duty seals ship 1,000 to a case. Heavy duty seals come 500, 1,000 or 2,000 to a case depending on size.
Core size
Plastic strap coils list a core size such as 16x6 or 8x8. The first number is the inside diameter of the core and the second is the core width, both in inches. The core has to match your dispenser or strapping machine.
- 16x6: common on hand-grade polypropylene.
- 8x8: common on machine-grade polypropylene. Some narrow machine strap is made for specific machines; the Notes column on the chart says which.
Polyester, cord and steel strapping don't list a core on our chart. If your dispenser needs a specific one, ask us before you order.
