Questions & answers

How many times should you wrap a pallet?

Wrap enough revolutions to cover the load height at your overlap, then add 2 to 4 extra wraps at the bottom and top to lock the load to the pallet. At 50% overlap, an 18 in. film covers 9 in. of height per wrap, so a 60 in. load needs 7 wraps plus the extras.

What does pre-stretch do to cost?

Film is stretched before it goes on the load, so each foot off the roll covers more. Hand wrap is usually stretched about 10–30% by hand. Machines with a powered pre-stretch carriage often run 150–300%. Use the figure your machine or supplier gives you.

What gauge should I use?

Lighter loads usually run 60–70 gauge hand film. General warehouse loads usually use 80 gauge, and heavy or sharp-cornered loads 90 gauge or more. Gauge is film thickness: 80 gauge = 0.8 mil, about 20 microns.

How is film weight worked out?

Weight (lb) = width (in) × length (ft) × gauge × 0.000003987, using the density of LLDPE stretch film (0.92 g/cc). Real rolls also carry a core, so a full roll weighs a little more.
