Router Bits & Saw Blades: Matching Diablo Tooling to the Material and Cut

A router bit or saw blade that physically fits your tool isn't automatically the right one for the job - profile, tooth count, and material rating matter more than whether it mounts up. Here's how to match tooling to the actual cut.

Router bit profiles: match the shape to the joint or edge detail

Router bits aren't interchangeable just because they're all "router bits" - each profile cuts a specific shape:

  • Flush trim: trims material flush to a template or substrate edge, often bearing-guided so it follows the template automatically
  • Mortising: cuts flat-bottom slots, the standard choice for hinge mortises and similar joinery
  • Rabbeting: cuts a stepped edge (a rabbet) for joints like cabinet backs or frame-and-panel construction
  • Round over / beading / cove / Roman ogee: decorative edge profiles, ranging from a simple rounded edge to more elaborate curved detailing
  • Chamfer: cuts a flat angled edge rather than a curve
  • Straight/double flute: general-purpose straight-line grooving and trimming, not a decorative profile

Bearing-guided bits (flush trim, some round over bits) follow the workpiece or a template edge directly, which matters for pattern routing - a non-bearing bit in the same profile requires a router table fence or jig instead. A router bit set bundles common profiles together and is usually cheaper per bit than buying the same spread individually, worth it if you need general shop coverage rather than one specific profile.

Saw blade tooth count: fewer teeth cut faster and rougher, more teeth cut slower and cleaner

Tooth count matters more than blade diameter for cut quality. Fewer, larger teeth remove material fast with a rougher cut - the right choice for ripping or framing lumber where speed matters more than a finished edge. More, smaller teeth cut slower but leave a cleaner edge - the right choice for plywood, laminate, and finish work where tear-out matters. Combination blades split the difference for general-purpose cutting.

Wood blades and metal blades are not interchangeable

Diablo's TiCo Hi-Density Carbide line is built for wood - general purpose, fine finish, and ultra finish variants for different cut quality needs. The Steel Demon line uses cermet tips instead of standard carbide specifically for cutting metal - cermet resists the heat buildup of cutting steel and stainless far better than a wood blade's carbide, which is why Steel Demon blades can typically dry-cut metal without cutting fluid. Running a wood blade on metal (or a metal blade on wood) isn't just inefficient - it destroys the blade fast and is a real safety hazard from blade failure or kickback.

Diameter still has to physically match your tool

Once tooth count and material rating are right, diameter and arbor size need to match your saw's rated maximum blade size - a blade that's too large for the saw's guard and rated capacity is a safety issue regardless of how well-suited the tooth geometry is to the material.
