Pick a cordless battery platform first, tools second
Every cordless tool you buy locks you into that brand's battery platform — batteries and chargers are rarely cross-compatible, even at the same voltage. Before buying an individual drill or saw, decide which battery platform you're standardizing on, then buy tools within that ecosystem. Running two or three platforms means duplicate chargers, batteries that can't be shared across tools on the same job, and higher total cost than committing to one line and staying in it.
Brushless motors cost more up front and less over time
Brushless motors run cooler, last longer (no brushes to wear out and replace), and deliver more runtime per battery charge than brushed motors, because they waste less energy as heat and friction. The price premium over a brushed tool is usually recovered in battery life and reduced downtime if the tool sees regular daily use. For occasional or light-duty use, brushed tools are still a reasonable way to save money up front.
Match torque and speed to the job, not just the tool category
Drills, impact drivers, and impact wrenches look similar but aren't interchangeable. A drill is built for controlled, variable-speed drilling and driving where you need clutch control to avoid overdriving a screw. An impact driver adds rotational impacts for driving long fasteners and removing stuck screws without stalling. An impact wrench delivers high torque for nuts and bolts and isn't built for precision driving at all. Buying an impact driver expecting drill-like control (or a drill expecting impact-wrench torque) is the most common mismatch we see.
Blades and bits: match the accessory to the material and cut, not the arbor size
A blade that physically fits your saw isn't necessarily the right blade for the cut. Tooth count and blade type matter more than diameter: fewer, larger teeth cut faster and rougher (good for framing lumber), more, smaller teeth cut slower and cleaner (good for plywood, laminate, and finish work), and blades built for metal or masonry use entirely different tooth geometry and materials than wood blades. Air compressors: size CFM to the tool, not the tank
Tank size determines how long you can run a tool before the compressor has to catch up; CFM (cubic feet per minute) output determines whether the compressor can keep up with the tool at all. Framing nailers, impact wrenches, and sanders each have a rated CFM requirement at a given PSI — if your compressor's CFM output is below what the tool needs, you'll get pressure drop and reduced tool performance no matter how big the tank is. Check the highest-draw tool you'll run and size the air compressor to that, with headroom for running more than one tool at once if that's how the shop actually works.
Hand tools still matter, even in a cordless shop
Cordless tools handle repetitive and high-torque work, but a well-stocked set of hand tools still covers the jobs where a power tool is overkill, unavailable, or risks overtightening — final torque checks, delicate assembly, and tight spaces where a corded or cordless tool simply doesn't fit.
