How to Choose the Right Packaging and Shipping Supplies (and Stop Overpaying on Freight)

Quick answer: Match stretch film gauge and cast-vs-blown to your load and wrap volume, size boxes and mailers to the product (not the inventory you already have) to avoid dimensional-weight charges, and move to bulk pallet-quantity ordering once you're going through more than a few cases a month of any one consumable.

Packaging is one of the few categories where the "correct" purchase depends as much on what happens after the box leaves your dock as on what's inside it. Buy stretch wrap that's too thin and a load shifts in transit; ship a small item in an oversized box and you pay dimensional-weight freight on empty space. Here's how to think through the packaging and shipping supplies we stock so you're specing for the actual shipment, not just grabbing the cheapest roll.

Stretch wrap: match the gauge to the load, not the price tag

Stretch film is sold by gauge (thickness) and by hand vs. machine application, and our WrapTite stretch wrap line covers both:

  • Hand film (dispensed from a handle) is right for lower-volume palletizing — a few dozen pallets a day or less — where an operator can control tension manually.
  • Machine film (higher-yield rolls built for stretch wrappers) is the right call once you're wrapping enough pallets a day that hand-wrapping becomes a labor bottleneck; it's engineered for consistent pre-stretch at wrapper speeds that hand film can't match.
  • Cast vs. blown film — cast is clearer, quieter to unroll, and cheaper per pound; blown holds tension longer and resists puncture better on irregular loads. Cast is the default for standard palletized freight; blown earns its higher cost on sharp-cornered or unstable loads.

The mistake we see most often is buying the thinnest film available and compensating with more wraps per pallet — that usually costs more in film and labor than buying a slightly heavier gauge to begin with.

Tape: width and mil thickness before brand

Carton sealing tape is specified by width (2" is standard for most cartons, 3" for heavier or larger boxes) and mil thickness (1.6–2.0 mil covers most cartons up to about 50 lbs; go heavier for anything denser or for cartons that'll sit in a warehouse before shipping). Boxes and mailers: size to the product, not the inventory on hand

The biggest hidden packaging cost is dimensional weight — carriers bill by box size as well as actual weight, so shipping a small, light item in an oversized box (even one you already have in stock) can cost more in freight than the box itself. Match corrugated boxes and mailers to the product's actual footprint rather than defaulting to whatever size you keep the most of.

Void fill and cushioning: protect the product, not the empty space

Use void fill to stabilize a properly-sized box, not to fill excess space in an oversized one. For fragile or high-value freight, our bubble and foam packaging — including custom-cut foam by quote — protects better than paper void fill without the added bulk. For loose or clean items that just need basic containment, poly bags are the simpler, cheaper option, and our paper supplies cover void fill and wrap stock where paper is the better fit. Shrink film is a different tool entirely — heat-applied, and used more for bundling multi-packs or protecting product from dust and moisture than for palletizing freight — so don't substitute one for the other.

Strapping for loads that stretch wrap alone won't secure

Stretch wrap stabilizes a palletized load; it doesn't substitute for strapping on loads that need rigid bundling — lumber, pipe, structural stock, or anything where the load itself needs to stay compressed rather than just wrapped. Poly strapping handles most general bundling; steel strapping is for heavier, higher-tension loads where poly would stretch or fail.

Labels built for the dock, not the office printer

Shipping, barcode, and hazard/handling labels seem like an afterthought until the wrong adhesive fails in cold storage or a mislabeled pallet gets misrouted. Buy by the pallet once volume justifies it

If you're going through more than a few cases a month of any single packaging consumable, request a bulk quote rather than reordering cases repeatedly; the freight cost per unit drops substantially at pallet volume.
