Electrical test gear for service and troubleshooting: digital multimeters rated 500/600 V, non-contact voltage detectors, dual-range voltage testers, and outlet and GFCI receptacle testers. A non-contact tester tells you whether a conductor is live and nothing more; a multimeter is what you reach for when the question is how much. Receptacle testers read the wiring pattern at the outlet and will show a reversed hot and neutral or an open ground in a second, which makes them the fastest check on old work.
