Roof Flashing

Roof flashing and flashing tape: Amerimax galvanized drip edge, IPS galvanized and thermoplastic pipe boots in 12 x 16 in., Oatey No-Calk thermoplastic flashing, and 3M and Protecto Wrap self-adhering flashing tape in 4 and 6 in. widths. A pipe boot is sized to the pipe diameter and to the roof pitch, and a boot made for a low slope will not lie flat on a steep one. Metal boots outlast thermoplastic but the rubber collar is the part that fails on either, usually well before the roof does, which is why a collar replacement is a common repair. Flashing tape is for window and door openings and for sealing a penetration under the roofing, not as a surface patch — it needs a clean dry substrate and it must be lapped shingle-fashion so water runs over each seam rather than into it.
