Hand pruning tools: Fiskars bypass pruners, bypass loppers, serrated hedge shears, pruning saws and curved extendable tree pruners, with stainless scissors alongside. Match the tool to the stem diameter rather than to the reach — hand pruners handle up to roughly 3/4 in. of green wood, loppers take you to an inch and a half with two hands on it, and past that it is a pruning saw. Bypass heads cut living wood cleanly and leave a wound that heals; anvil heads crush and belong on deadwood. Carbon steel holds an edge longer and needs to be dried after use, stainless resists sap and rust and takes touching up more often.
