Shackle diameter and clearance are what decide whether a lock fits the hasp and how hard it is to cut — measure the shackle opening you need before buying, because a long shackle that reaches is also the one that takes a bolt cutter. Laminated steel bodies are the general-purpose commercial choice; hardened steel and ball-bearing locking mechanisms resist shimming and prying and belong on gates and outdoor storage. Combination locks remove the key problem and add a shared-code problem, which is usually the wrong trade on anything that has to be auditable.
