Exterior wood stains and finishes from Benjamin Moore Woodluxe and Cabot Australian Timber Oil, in transparent and translucent tones, in waterborne and penetrating oil formulas, in quart, gallon and aerosol. Opacity is the decision that sets how often you will be back on the deck — a transparent penetrating oil shows the grain and needs refreshing sooner, a more pigmented finish blocks more UV and lasts longer. Oil-based penetrating finishes soak in and wear away rather than peeling, which makes recoating a wash-and-apply job; waterborne film finishes hold color longer but will eventually need stripping where they fail. Coverage on bare or weathered wood runs well under the label figure, and nothing in this category holds on a surface that is still damp or has a previous film on it.
