Micron to mil converter (and gauge)
Type a thickness into any box. The others update. Use it for stretch film, poly bags, sheeting and liners. 1 mil = 25.4 microns = 100 gauge.
Common film thicknesses
| Microns | Mil | Gauge | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.5 | 0.33 | 33 | Pre-stretched hand film |
| 11.9 | 0.47 | 47 | Down-gauged performance hand film |
| 15.2 | 0.6 | 60 | Light-load hand film |
| 17.8 | 0.7 | 70 | Light to medium hand film |
| 20.3 | 0.8 | 80 | General-purpose stretch film |
| 22.9 | 0.9 | 90 | Heavier loads, blown film |
| 25.4 | 1 | 100 | Light poly bags |
| 30.5 | 1.2 | 120 | Heavy or sharp-cornered loads (stretch film) |
| 50.8 | 2 | 200 | Standard poly bags and sheeting |
| 76.2 | 3 | 300 | Heavy-duty bags, liners |
| 101.6 | 4 | 400 | Extra-heavy bags |

Questions & answers
How many microns is 1 mil?
1 mil is exactly 25.4 microns. A mil is one thousandth of an inch (0.001 in.), and an inch is 25.4 mm.
What is gauge in plastic film?
In North American film, 100 gauge = 1 mil. So 80 gauge stretch film is 0.8 mil, about 20.3 microns. Each gauge point is 0.254 microns.
Is a thinner film always weaker?
Not always. Resin and process (cast vs blown, pre-stretched, multi-layer) change strength and stretch. A 47 gauge performance film can hold loads that would need a thicker conventional film. Thickness is a starting point, not the whole answer.
Why do some films list microns?
Microns are the metric unit and are common on pre-stretched and imported films. Use this converter to compare them with films listed in mil or gauge.
