Pumps: match the ratio to viscosity and volume, not just horsepower
Airless and air-assisted pumps are rated by pressure ratio (the mechanical advantage between air input and fluid output) — a higher ratio moves thicker material at usable pressure, while a lower ratio is enough for thin coatings and light-duty use. Undersizing a pump for a heavy material shows up as poor atomization and an uneven finish; oversizing wastes material and can make fine finish work harder to control.
Spray guns and tips: the tip orifice controls both finish and flow rate
Spray tip size (orifice diameter and fan pattern) determines two things at once: the fineness of the finish and how much material moves through the gun per minute. A tip sized for a fine automotive-grade finish will bottleneck a high-volume industrial coating job, and a tip sized for high-volume coverage will lay down too much material for fine finish work. Regulators: pressure control, not a fix for a bad spray pattern
Air and fluid regulators control pressure at the gun independent of pump output, and they're often the right tool for dialing in a spray pattern rather than swapping tips or pumps. If a spray pattern looks wrong — tailing, spitting, or uneven fan width — check regulator pressure and tip condition before assuming the pump or material is the problem. Turning up pressure to compensate for a worn tip or clogged filter usually makes the finish worse, not better.
Hoses: pressure rating and length both affect performance
Fluid and air hoses need to be rated for your system's operating pressure — using an underrated hose is a safety issue, not just a performance one. Beyond pressure rating, longer hose runs and smaller diameters both increase pressure drop between the pump and the gun, which can show up as reduced atomization quality at the tip even when the pump itself is functioning normally. If a finish looks worse at the far end of a long hose run than close to the pump, pressure drop is worth checking before anything else.
Inline filters: matched to the tip, not a one-size screen
Inline filters need a mesh size matched to the spray tip's orifice — too coarse and debris reaches the tip and clogs it mid-job; too fine and the filter itself restricts flow and drops pressure at the gun. When switching to a smaller tip for finer work, check whether the filter mesh needs to come down with it.
Agitators: keep settling materials mixed, don't skip them on heavy coatings
Some coatings — particularly those with heavier solids or metallic/mica additives — settle in the pot faster than they're sprayed, leading to inconsistent color or texture over the course of a job. Our agitators keep material consistently mixed through a spray run; they're not necessary for every material, but skipping one on a settling-prone coating shows up as visible inconsistency by the end of a large job.
