A spray finishing system is only as good as its weakest matched component - a great pump feeding an undersized tip, or a worn filter choking a properly sized gun, produces the same bad finish as buying the wrong pump in the first place. Here's how the pieces of a Berizzi system are supposed to work together.
Pumps: sized by pressure ratio, not horsepower
Airless and air-assisted pumps are rated by pressure ratio - the mechanical advantage between air input and fluid output. A higher ratio moves thicker material at usable pressure; a lower ratio is plenty for thin coatings. The sizing question isn't "biggest available pump" but what ratio your specific coating needs to atomize properly at your target flow rate. Undersized for the material shows up as poor atomization and an uneven finish; oversized wastes material and makes fine finish work harder to control precisely.
Spray tips: the orifice controls both finish quality and flow rate at once
Tip orifice size determines two things simultaneously - how fine the finish is and how much material moves through per minute. A tip sized for a fine finish will bottleneck a high-volume coating job; a tip sized for volume will lay down too much material for fine work. Match the tip to the material and finish target first, then confirm the pump and gun can support that tip's flow rate.
Regulators: the first thing to check when a spray pattern looks wrong
Regulators control pressure at the gun independent of pump output, and they're usually the right tool for dialing in a spray pattern - not the pump or the material. If a pattern is tailing, spitting, or the fan width is uneven, check regulator pressure and tip condition before swapping components. Turning pressure up to compensate for a worn tip or a clogged filter typically makes the finish worse, not better.
Hoses: pressure rating is a safety spec, not just a performance one
Hoses need to be rated for your system's actual operating pressure - an underrated hose is a safety issue. Beyond that, longer hose runs and smaller diameters both increase pressure drop between pump and gun, which shows up as weaker atomization at the far end of a long run even when the pump itself is working fine.
Repair parts: budget them as maintenance, not a surprise cost
Seals, tips, and filters wear out with normal use and degrade finish quality gradually before they fail outright - a worn tip or seal often shows up as a slowly worsening finish that's easy to misdiagnose as a material or technique problem. Keeping spares on hand and replacing wear parts on a schedule keeps the system running at spec instead of drifting.
