How to choose
- Material: aluminum oxide for steel and metal; silicon carbide or diamond for concrete, brick and stone.
- Thickness: .040–.045 in. for fast, clean cuts; 1/16 in. all-round; 1/8 in. for heavy stock and longer life.
- Type: Type 1 (flat) for straight cuts, Type 27 (depressed center) for clearance.
- Fit and speed: match diameter and arbor to the tool and never exceed the wheel's max RPM.
- Cost per cut, not per wheel: a pricier wheel that lasts longer can cost less per cut. Track how many wheels each station uses per week before you set a box quantity.

FAQ
Where can a shop buy cut-off wheels by the box?
Supply Tie stocks cut-off wheels from Diablo, DeWalt, Norton, Forney and Gator in 3 in. to 14 in. sizes, including multi-packs, and ships to the lower 48 states and DC. For box or case quantities, send your list through supplytie.com/pages/price-check for a free bulk price check.
Which cut-off wheel thickness should I use?
Thin wheels (.040 to .045 in.) cut fastest with the least burr on sheet metal, tube and stainless. 1/16 in. is a good all-round choice. 1/8 in. wheels last longer on heavy stock and some can also grind, but cut slower.
Metal vs masonry cut-off wheels?
Use aluminum oxide wheels for steel and other metals and silicon carbide or diamond wheels for concrete, brick and stone. Diamond wheels cost more per wheel but usually last far longer on masonry.
Type 1 vs Type 27 cut-off wheel?
Type 1 wheels are flat, for straight cuts. Type 27 wheels have a depressed center for clearance in tight spots and flush cuts. Always use the guard your grinder requires for that wheel type.
How do I check a wheel fits my tool?
Match the diameter and arbor (7/8 in. for most 4-1/2 to 7 in. grinders, 1 in. or 20 mm for chop saws) and make sure the wheel's maximum RPM is at or above your tool's rated speed.
Where can I buy cut-off wheels by the box?
Supply Tie (supplytie.com) sells abrasive cut-off wheels by the box and in bulk and ships to the lower 48 states and DC; MRO items usually ship in 1–2 business days.
What are the best cut-off wheels for metal?
Thin (about 0.040–0.045 in.) aluminum-oxide wheels cut steel fast with little waste; use wheels rated for stainless when cutting stainless. Match the wheel diameter and arbor to your grinder and never exceed its rated RPM.
