How to Choose the Right Abrasives for Grinding and Sanding
Quick answer: Work through a grit sequence instead of guessing at one grit, match the attachment type (hook-and-loop, PSA adhesive-back, or belt size) to your tool before comparing grit, and swap an abrasive out once it stops cutting efficiently — a worn disc costs more in labor than a fresh one costs in materials.
Abrasives are a consumable, and the biggest waste we see isn't buying the wrong grit — it's running one disc or belt well past the point it's actually removing material efficiently, or skipping grit steps and fighting the material instead of the abrasive. Here's how to think through the grinding and sanding lines we stock.
Work a grit sequence, don't guess at one grit
Coarse grits (40–80) remove material fast and are for shaping, leveling, or stripping — not a finished surface. Medium grits (100–150) blend out the scratch pattern the coarse grit left. Fine and very fine grits (180 and up) are for final finish and between-coat scuffing, not material removal. Jumping straight to a fine grit on a rough surface just burns discs without leveling anything; jumping straight to coarse on a nearly-finished surface leaves scratches the finer grits were supposed to erase. Match the attachment type to the tool first
Sanding discs come in different backing systems — hook-and-loop (reusable, quick-change) and PSA/adhesive-backed (self-stick, typically lower cost per disc but not reusable) — and the wrong backing simply won't mount to your sander. Confirm your tool's pad type before comparing grit or brand within our sanding discs collection; hook-and-loop is the better choice if you're swapping grits frequently on the same job, PSA is often cheaper for high-volume single-grit runs.
Sandpaper, discs, and belts aren't interchangeable — match the tool and the surface
Sheet sandpaper is for hand-sanding and small palm/orbital sanders on flat or contoured work where a disc's rigid shape doesn't conform. Discs are built for random-orbital and rotary sanders on flat panel work. Sanding belts are for belt sanders and stationary sanding equipment doing high-volume material removal — they cut faster than discs but require matching belt size and confirming correct tracking on the tool.
Sponges for contour work and light hand-sanding
Our abrasive sponges flex around corners, curves, and moldings that a rigid disc or sheet can't follow, and they're the standard tool for between-coat scuffing on paint and finish work where you need to knock down texture without cutting through to bare material. They're a hand-sanding tool, not a substitute for powered sanding on large flat areas.
Cut-off and grinding wheels: match the wheel to the material, and check the RPM rating
Cut-off and grinding wheels are material-specific — a wheel built for metal will load up, glaze, or fail prematurely on masonry, and vice versa — so confirm the wheel is rated for what you're actually cutting or grinding before matching it to a brand. Just as important: every wheel has a maximum RPM rating printed on it, and running it on a tool that exceeds that rating is a safety hazard, not just a performance issue — always match wheel RPM rating to the tool, never assume compatibility because the arbor size fits. Know when to swap, not stretch, an abrasive
A disc, belt, or wheel that's glazed, loaded with material, or visibly worn down is cutting far slower than a fresh one — and the labor time lost pushing a dull abrasive almost always costs more than the abrasive itself. Budget abrasives as a real consumable line item with regular replacement, not a one-time purchase.
