How to Choose the Right Adhesive (and Stop Guessing at the Aisle)
Quick answer: Match the adhesive family to the bond, not the brand — CA glue for instant, small-area bonds; epoxy for structural or gap-filling work; construction adhesive for large surfaces and dissimilar materials; and treat thread lockers and caulks/sealants as separate categories entirely, since neither is a substitute for a structural adhesive.
"Adhesive" isn't one product category, it's at least six, and picking from the wrong one is the most common reason a bond fails — not a defective tube. Here's how the adhesive and tape lines we stock break down by what they're actually built to do.
Cyanoacrylate (CA/super glue): fast and strong, but rigid and small-area only
Our super/CA glue line sets in seconds to a couple of minutes and bonds hard, non-porous materials (metal, hard plastic, rubber) extremely well in shear. It's the wrong choice for gap-filling (it's not designed to bridge space between parts), for anything that needs to flex, or for large surface areas where it'll set before you can position the parts. Think small parts, tight tolerances, quick fixes — not furniture assembly or structural work.
Epoxy and structural adhesives: the load-bearing, gap-filling option
Our epoxy and structural adhesives cure slower than CA glue (anywhere from minutes to 24 hours depending on the formulation) in exchange for real structural strength, gap-filling ability, and better performance on dissimilar or porous materials. If a bond needs to carry real load — metal to metal, filling a gap between mismatched surfaces, or replacing a mechanical fastener — this is the category to shop, not CA glue with more coats.
Construction adhesive: built for coverage, not precision
Where epoxy is precise and structural, construction adhesive is built for large-area bonding — subfloor to joist, paneling to studs, trim to drywall — with enough gap-filling and flexibility to handle uneven or dissimilar surfaces (wood to concrete, foam to metal) that a rigid adhesive would crack on. It's typically applied with a caulk gun in a bead pattern rather than spread thin, and it stays somewhat flexible after cure so it can handle minor material movement.
Spray adhesives: even coverage over large flat areas
Our spray adhesives exist for a specific job that wet or bead-applied adhesive does poorly: laminating fabric, foam, or panel material over a large flat area without lumps, ridges, or dry spots. Spray adhesive isn't structural — it's the right call for upholstery, insulation facing, and template/pattern work, not for anything expected to carry a mechanical load.
Sealants and caulks: sealing the joint, not bonding the load
It's easy to lump sealants and caulks in with adhesives because they come in similar tubes and cartridges, but their job is different: filling and sealing a joint against air, water, or moisture movement, with enough flexibility to handle the joint expanding and contracting. Using a caulk where you need a structural bond — or a structural adhesive where you need a flexible weatherproof seal — is one of the most common mismatches we see.
Thread lockers: sized to the bolt, not the job
Thread lockers are their own category, matched by strength grade rather than "how strong an adhesive do I need": low-strength (removable by hand tools, for fasteners you'll adjust regularly), medium-strength (the default for most general assembly), and high-strength (intended to be effectively permanent, requiring heat to remove). Our thread locker line is specified by strength grade first — pick based on whether that fastener will ever need to come back out, not on bolt size alone.
Double-sided tape and adhesive accessories: when clamping isn't practical
For mounting jobs where wet adhesive would squeeze out, run, or need clamping time you don't have, double-sided tape — in foam, film, or transfer-tape formats depending on the gap-filling and bond-strength needs — is often the better tool than a liquid adhesive.
