Sealants are selected by the joint they fill and what moves. Siliconised latex and acrylic caulks are paintable and suit trim and interior joints; pure silicone stays flexible and sheds water but will not take paint; polyurethane handles structural movement and abrasion. Joint width and expected movement decide which class is appropriate, and every one of them depends on a clean, dry, sound surface. Tool the bead so it makes contact with both faces rather than bridging the gap.
