Primer is a preparation coat, and what it is formulated to do decides whether the finish above it lasts. Stain-blocking primers seal water marks, smoke and tannin bleed so they do not telegraph through the topcoat; bonding primers give paint something to grip on glossy or previously coated surfaces. Shellac- and oil-based primers block the most stubborn stains but need the right solvent for cleanup, while water-based versions are lower odour and dry faster. Spot-prime bare patches before a full coat, and let the primer cure for the time the label states rather than the time you have.
