Exterior wood coatings are specified by opacity and by whether they penetrate or film-form. Penetrating stains wear away gradually rather than peeling, which makes recoating a wash-and-reapply job instead of a stripping job. Film-forming products give more colour and UV protection but fail at the edges once water gets behind them. Application temperature and the moisture content of the wood affect service life more than product grade does — coating damp or sun-baked timber is the usual reason a finish fails early.
