How to Choose the Right Work Gloves (and Not Overbuy)

Gloves are one of the highest-SKU-count categories in industrial supply for a reason: the right glove is entirely dependent on the specific hazard, and using the wrong category of glove is both a safety gap and, often, a bigger expense than the "premium" glove would have been. Here's how to narrow it down, using the glove categories we stock as a framework.

Start with the hazard, not the material

Work gloves break down into a handful of protection categories, and mixing them up is the single most common purchasing mistake:

  • Disposable gloves (nitrile, biodegradable nitrile like our 945PF, sold in case packs of 10 boxes) are for contamination control and light chemical splash, not mechanical protection — they're not rated for cut or puncture resistance.
  • Coated & knit gloves (String Knit S966/S966E/S988 lines, sold 240 pair/20 dozen per case) are general-purpose dexterity gloves for handling, assembly, and light abrasion — the coating (usually nitrile or PU on the palm) adds grip without adding cut protection.
  • Cut-resistant gloves (Aramid/Leather Face K300LF and K300LFE lines) are purpose-built for sharp-edge handling — sheet metal, glass, blades — and should be selected by ANSI/ISEA cut level (A1–A9), not assumed from the word "cut-resistant" on the label.
  • Leather & welding gloves (Big Ole G2 and Big Ole Leather Palm lines, Clute Cut Leather Palm) protect against heat, sparks, and abrasion — these are the right call for welding, foundry work, and general heavy handling, but they don't provide the same cut-level certification as a dedicated cut-resistant glove.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves protect against specific chemical classes (not all chemical-resistant gloves resist all chemicals — the material matters more than the "chemical-resistant" label).
  • Cold/winter gloves are insulation-first, and sleeves & accessories extend protection up the arm for tasks where the hazard doesn't stop at the wrist.

If a task has more than one hazard (e.g., handling sharp metal that's also cold, or welding near sharp edges), you may need a glove built for the primary hazard plus supplemental protection (sleeves, liners) rather than hunting for one glove that claims to do everything.

Buying by the case is almost always the right call for consumables

Because most of our glove lines are sold in dozen-pair or case quantities (a case of Cotton Cut/Sewn gloves runs anywhere from 6 to 25 dozen pair depending on the style, and coated string knit gloves come 240 pair to a case), the per-pair cost drops sharply compared to buying single pairs. For any glove that's a regular consumable on your floor — general handling gloves, disposable gloves — sizing your order to a full case (or dozen) is typically the better economics, assuming you have the storage and the turnover to use them before any shelf-life-sensitive materials (like nitrile) degrade.

The exception is a glove you're trialing for a new task or a specialty item (like a specific anti-vibration model) where you want to confirm fit and performance with your team before committing to a full case.

Anti-vibration gloves are a specialized (and often overlooked) category

Anti-vibration gloves (our AV1121, AV1160, AV805 lines) are built with padding and dampening materials specifically to reduce hand-arm vibration exposure from powered tools — grinders, impact wrenches, jackhammers, chainsaws. If your team runs powered tools for extended periods, these are a distinct purchase from general cut- or abrasion-resistant gloves, and substituting a standard leather or knit glove doesn't provide meaningful vibration dampening even if it "feels" thicker.

Aprons belong in the same conversation

We stock nitrile, PVC, and vinyl aprons (Apron Nitrile Black/Yellow, Apron PVC Aqua Green, Blue Vinyl Apron) alongside gloves because they're frequently bought together for the same tasks — food processing, chemical handling, wash-down areas. Matching the apron material to the same chemical or contamination hazard as the glove avoids a mismatched setup where hands are protected but the material contacting a smock or uniform isn't.

Quick buying checklist

  • Identify the primary hazard first (cut, chemical, heat/spark, cold, vibration, contamination) — don't shop by material or price first
  • Check ANSI/ISEA cut level on cut-resistant gloves rather than assuming from the product name
  • Buy consumable/general-purpose gloves by the case or dozen once usage is established; buy single pairs only to trial a new style
  • Treat anti-vibration gloves as a distinct category tied to powered-tool exposure, not a subset of general work gloves
  • Match apron material to the same hazard class as the glove for any task involving chemicals or contamination control
