How to Choose the Right Lighting and Electrical Supplies

LED bulbs: lumens and color temperature, not watts

Watts measure power draw, not brightness — with LED, a low-watt bulb can produce as much light as a much higher-watt incandescent, so comparing bulbs by watts alone is comparing the wrong number. Use lumens to compare actual brightness, and color temperature (measured in Kelvin) to match the light quality to the space: 2700–3000K reads warm and residential, 3500–4100K is a neutral general-purpose white, and 5000K+ reads cool and closer to daylight, better suited to work areas and detail-oriented tasks. An electrical box has to be sized by fill capacity — the volume required for the number of conductors, devices, and clamps going into it — not just whether the box physically fits the opening.
