Water-Activated Tape: Reinforced vs Non-Reinforced, and When Printed Tape Pays Off
Share
Water-activated tape (WAT), also called gummed tape, is a paper tape coated with a starch-based adhesive that does nothing until it is wetted. Once a dispenser moistens it and you press it onto a corrugated box, the adhesive soaks into the paper fibers of the carton and becomes part of the box. That is the core difference from plastic carton sealing tape, which sits on top of the surface.
This guide covers the two decisions most buyers face: reinforced or non-reinforced, and plain or printed.
Why ship stations switch to water-activated tape
- Tamper evidence. Because the tape bonds into the box fibers, it can't be peeled off and re-applied cleanly. A torn or missing strip is obvious, which is why "If Seal Is Broken" printed versions exist.
- It holds on dusty or recycled corrugated. Pressure-sensitive tape can struggle on dusty or high-recycled-content boxes, while gummed tape bonds into the fibers.
- One strip instead of several. A single strip of gummed tape usually does the job that several passes of plastic tape would, because it becomes part of the carton.
- Paper, not plastic. The tape is kraft paper, so it goes out with the box. Check your local recycling rules for reinforced grades, which contain fiberglass strands.
Reinforced vs non-reinforced
Reinforced gummed tape has fiberglass strands laminated between two layers of paper, usually in a crisscross pattern. The strands keep the tape from splitting when a heavy or overstuffed carton flexes, gets dropped, or is stacked on a pallet. It is the default for most shipping.
Non-reinforced (flat) gummed tape is a single paper layer with no strands. It suits lighter cartons, retail packaging and inner cases where appearance matters more than strength.
A simple rule: if the box is heavy, will ride in a truck with other freight, or will be stacked, use reinforced. If it is light and mostly about presentation, non-reinforced is enough.
Economy vs industrial grades
Reinforced tape comes in grades. Our stocked WrapTite water-activated reinforced gum tape is offered in an economy grade (WOLVERINE 3.0) and industrial grades (WOLVERINE 4.0 and 4.1, and SPYDER 4.0). Industrial grades are the better choice for heavier boxes and rougher handling, and economy grades cover everyday shipping. It comes in:
- Widths: 70 mm, 72 mm and 3 in.
- Roll lengths: 375 ft, 450 ft and 1,000 ft (roll length and rolls per case vary by option)
- Colors: kraft and white
- Pre-printed options: "FRAGILE" and "If Seal Is Broken"
It is sold by the case, with 6, 8 or 10 rolls per case depending on the option.
When printed tape pays off
Printed gummed tape puts your logo, brand colors or handling instructions on every box. It pays off when:
- you ship enough cartons that every box is a branding impression (e-commerce and retail fulfillment);
- you want a tamper-evident seal that is visibly yours, so a re-taped box stands out;
- you need handling instructions ("Fragile", "This Side Up", "Do Not Stack") on every carton without extra labels.
We quote custom printed water-activated tape in reinforced and non-reinforced grades, in 70 mm, 76 mm or custom widths. Send your artwork, number of print colors and quantity, and we will come back with pricing and lead time.
What you need to use it
Water-activated tape needs a gummed-tape dispenser that wets the adhesive as the tape feeds out. Manual dispensers suit lower volumes, and electric dispensers that cut preset lengths speed up busy ship stations. Our standard tape dispensers are made for pressure-sensitive tape, not gummed tape. If you need a gummed-tape dispenser, note it on the quote form and we will price one with your tape.
Water-activated tape or plastic carton sealing tape?
For light, low-volume shipping, plastic tape is quick and needs no special dispenser. Our WrapTite acrylic carton sealing tape is a good general-purpose choice, and we also quote printed carton sealing tape. Switch to water-activated tape when security, heavy boxes, dusty corrugated or branding start to matter.
