Steel Framing Connectors: Joist Hangers, Angle Brackets, and When to Use Each

Structural connectors are one of the few categories where "close enough" is a real safety issue, not just an inefficiency. Every connector in a frame is part of a load path - from roof to wall to foundation - and a mismatched or undersized connector breaks that chain even if everything around it is done correctly.
Joist hangers: match the exact lumber size, not the closest one
A joist hanger supports the end of a joist or beam framed into a ledger or header at a butt joint, transferring that load into the ledger instead of relying on toe-nails alone. Hangers are sized and rated for specific lumber dimensions - a hanger sized for a 2x8 doesn't properly support a 2x10 even though it might physically hold it in place. Match the hanger to the actual lumber dimensions on the job, not the closest size you have on hand.
Post bases: keep the post dry and transfer the load correctly
A post base anchors a wood post to a concrete footing or slab while lifting the post's end grain off the concrete, which reduces moisture wicking and rot at the base. Standoff post bases raise the post further above the slab for wet or exterior environments where standard post bases don't provide enough clearance. Post bases also transfer vertical load - and in many designs, lateral and uplift load - into the footing, so sizing needs to match both the post dimension and what the connection is expected to resist.
Angle brackets and L-angles: general framing, not a substitute for engineered connectors
Angle brackets and L-angles handle general corner and framing connections - bracing, blocking, shelving supports, deck framing reinforcement. They're load-rated by gauge and size, but they're a different category from an engineered joist hanger or post base - use them for general reinforcement, not as a substitute anywhere a connection is specifically engineered to call for a hanger or structural strap.
Straps and tie plates: resisting pull-apart, not just bracing
Flat straps and tie plates splice or reinforce framing members across a joint - tying a stud to a top plate, bridging a splice in a rafter, or reinforcing a notched member. Where angle brackets mostly resist racking and bracing loads, straps are specified to resist tension - the forces trying to pull a joint apart, like uplift on a roof in high wind. Specify strap length and gauge to the actual connection, not by what looks long enough.
Fasteners and coatings are part of the rating, not an afterthought
A connector's load rating assumes it's installed with the specific fastener type the manufacturer specifies - typically structural connector nails, not general-purpose deck screws or whatever's in the bin. Using the wrong fastener can reduce the connector's actual capacity even when the connector itself is exactly right for the job. On coating: standard galvanized connectors can corrode faster in contact with modern ACQ-treated lumber, so check for a higher-corrosion-resistance coating (like ZMax) on any connector that will be in ongoing contact with treated wood or exterior exposure.
