Ratchet vs. Cam Buckle Tie-Down Straps: Which One and What Rating

Most tie-down failures aren't the strap breaking - they're the strap being rated for less than the load, or being the wrong mechanism for the job in the first place. Getting this right comes down to three things: mechanism, rated capacity, and matching end fittings to your actual anchor points.

Ratchet vs. cam buckle: how they actually work

A ratchet strap uses a geared lever mechanism that lets you crank the strap progressively tighter with real mechanical advantage. That makes it the right choice for heavy, rigid cargo - lumber, machinery, equipment on a trailer, anything that needs to be cinched down hard and won't be damaged by high tension.

A cam buckle strap uses a spring-loaded friction cam - you pull the strap through by hand, and friction holds it in place. There's no mechanical advantage, so cam buckles top out at lower working loads, but they're faster to release and won't over-tighten. That makes them the better choice for lighter or more fragile loads - soft luggage, furniture pads, anything you don't want crushed by ratchet-level tension.

Working load limit, not breaking strength, is the number that matters

Every rated strap has two different numbers: breaking strength (the load at which it actually fails) and working load limit, or WLL (the maximum load it's rated for in normal use, typically around a third of breaking strength). The WLL is the number printed on the strap and the one to size against - it already accounts for wear, dynamic loading, and the safety margin you need for a strap that's tightened once and expected to hold through the whole trip.

Road shock loading is the reason that margin matters. A sudden stop or a pothole can spike the load on a strap well above the cargo's static weight - a strap loaded right up to its WLL with no headroom has nothing left when that spike hits.

Sizing width and capacity to the load

1 in. straps are the common choice for lighter loads - Supply Tie's 1 in. ratchet straps run from 300 lb up to 1,000 lb WLL depending on construction. For heavier loads, 2 in. straps step up substantially - the 2 in. Keeper ratchet strap in this line is rated to 3,333 lb. As a rule of thumb, size total strap capacity (add up the WLL of every strap securing the load) to comfortably exceed the cargo weight, not just meet it - and use at least two straps on anything that could shift or rotate, even if one strap's rating technically covers the weight.

Matching end fittings to your anchor points

S-hooks, flat hooks, and wire hooks all attach to different anchor styles - stake pockets, D-rings, E-track - and a hook that doesn't seat fully in the anchor point can slip loose under vibration even if the strap itself is rated correctly. Check what anchor points your trailer or truck bed actually has before ordering, not just the strap capacity.
