Corner board sizes: legs, length and grade, and how to order them

Corner boards, also called edge protectors, go on the vertical edges of a pallet load under the strapping or stretch film. They spread the pressure of the strap across the edge so it doesn't cut into the cartons, and they help hold the load square. Buyers usually know they need them. The questions we get are about sizes: which leg width, what length, and how heavy.

How a corner board size is written

A corner board size is leg × leg × length × thickness. A 3 in × 3 in × 48 in board has two 3-inch sides and is 48 inches long. The thickness is given in inches, such as 0.125 in, or as a grade: light, medium or heavy.

Leg width

  • 1.5 in × 1.5 in: lighter cartons and smaller loads.
  • 2 in × 2 in: the common middle size for boxed pallets.
  • 3 in × 3 in: heavier loads and wider cartons, where more of the edge needs cover.
  • 2 in × 3 in: unequal legs, for loads that need more cover on one face than the other.

Length

Match the length to the height of the load, or go a little shorter so the board sits inside the strapping. We quote 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 and 96 in lengths by the pallet. If you run a length that isn't on that list, send it to us with your leg size and we will quote it.

Grade

Pallet-quantity corner boards are quoted in light, medium and heavy grades. Heavier loads and tighter strapping need a heavier grade. Tell us the load weight and how you strap it, and we will match the grade.

Ordering

Buying corner boards with film and strapping, or matching what you use now? Send us your list and we will match it, usually within 1 business day.
