Pallet Jack Buying Guide: Manual vs. Semi-Electric vs. Full-Electric

Pallet jack pricing spans from a few hundred dollars to well into five figures, and the right tier isn't about budget - it's about how many times a day the truck actually moves a load. Buy above your real usage and you've overspent; buy below it and you've created a bottleneck your team fights every shift.
Start with the pallet, not the truck
Before comparing pallet jacks, measure your pallets. Standard GMA pallets run 48" x 40", but plenty of operations run 48" x 48" or a custom size. Fork spread needs to clear your pallet's stringers without straddling them - that's why 27" width and 45"-48" length are the most common sizing. If your operation runs mixed pallet sizes, an adjustable-width truck avoids having to stock two different jacks for the same job.
Manual, semi-electric, or full-electric: match to moves per shift
Manual hydraulic pallet jacks make sense for occasional moves - a handful of pallets a shift, short distances, mostly flat floors. No batteries to maintain, effectively no downtime, and the lowest cost by a wide margin.
Semi-electric pallet jacks add powered lift/lower or powered drive while the operator still steers and walks alongside. These earn their cost once an operator is running 20-30+ moves a shift and manual pumping starts costing real time and wearing on shoulders.
Full-electric pallet trucks make sense once a truck is in near-constant use across a shift, especially over longer distances or with heavier average loads. As a rough guide: under 50 moves a day, manual is usually fine; 50-150, look at semi-electric; above 150, full-electric typically pays for itself in labor hours within a year.
Scale-equipped models: only if weighing is already part of the workflow
A built-in scale saves an extra handling step for operations that already weigh outbound pallets separately - but it's an added cost that isn't worth it if weighing isn't already a step in your process. Don't add it by default just because it's available on the model you're already buying.
Once you're lifting above 6 feet, you're past a pallet jack
Pallet jacks move loads horizontally at floor level. Once the task involves lifting or stacking beyond about 6 feet, a straddle stacker is the next step up - the straddle legs mean no counterweight is needed, which matters in tighter aisles than a sit-down forklift can work in.
