Evaporative Cooler Parts: Pads, Pumps, and What to Replace Each Season

An evaporative cooler ("swamp cooler") only has a handful of parts that actually wear out, but almost all of them are model-specific enough that "close enough" doesn't fit right. Here's what typically needs replacing, in roughly the order it fails.
Aspen pads: the part that wears out first, almost every season
The pad (aspen or "excelsior" pad) is the wet media hot air passes through to be cooled - it's also the part that wears out fastest, since it's constantly wet, exposed to mineral buildup from the water, and breaks down physically over a season of use. Replace it when airflow smells musty or mildewy, cooling output drops noticeably even with the pump running, or the pad is visibly matted, thin, or crusted with mineral scale. Pads are sized by height and width to match your cooler cabinet's specific side opening - measure the existing pad (or the opening itself) rather than guessing by "small/medium/large," since a pad that's close but not exact won't seat and wick evenly.
The pump: what actually distributes water to the pads
A small submersible pump sits in the sump (the water reservoir at the bottom of the unit) and circulates water up to the distribution line that wets the pads from the top. Signs of a failing pump: dry spots on the pad even with water in the sump, weak or uneven water flow across the pad, or a pump that's running/humming but not moving water. Pumps are rated by output and sized to physically fit your cooler's pump mount - check your unit's specs rather than assuming pumps are universal across brands.
Float valve: keeps the sump at the right water level
The float valve works like a toilet fill valve - it shuts off incoming water once the sump reaches the correct level, and reopens as water evaporates or drains. A valve stuck open causes overflow; one stuck closed starves the pump and dries out the pad. Float valves come in plastic, brass, and bronze depending on water hardness and mineral content in your area - harder water tends to favor a more corrosion- and scale-resistant material.
Coating and oil: the maintenance products, not just the moving parts
Evaporative cooler cabinets are typically unpainted or thin galvanized steel, and the constant wet exposure means the interior needs a protective coating applied periodically to prevent rust - this is a maintenance step worth doing at the start of the season, not just a repair after the fact. Older belt-drive units also have motor and bearing points that need occasional lubrication with an oil made for the purpose - this is separate from anything on the water side and shouldn't be substituted with general-purpose oil.
Motors: the one part worth ordering by your unit's model number
Blower and pump motors do fail, but they're specific enough to the make and model of your cooler (mounting, shaft orientation, horsepower, voltage) that it's worth pulling your unit's model number before ordering rather than buying by generic specs - a mismatched motor often won't mount or wire up correctly even if the horsepower looks right.
